Fromall othergoy Tourismo Bus Mercedes Benz Tourismo.
Nothing in common! Apart from the name, the old Tourismo gave me mixed feelings. On the one hand it was almost a perfect workhorse, assembled in Turkey, and brought a good profit to European carriers. On the other hand, I didn’t like the old gear shifting «poker» which evoked an analogy with the antediluvian LAZ-695. But you have to give credit to the predecessor of today’s Mercedes-Benz Tourismo: it was sold out in twelve thousand copies! Isn’t that a testament to its popularity??! At this moment, it can often be found not only in cities not only in Turkey or Germany, but also in Switzerland, France, many other countries, including the European Union capital – Brussels. The new Tourismo is not just a descendant of a now-known model, it’s a fundamentally different bus. More advanced, more comfortable, more powerful and more productive. Its body became wider by 50 mm, and the front part lengthened by 100 40 mm, it installed a more powerful air conditioner, and the modernized front axle noticeably increased the smoothness of movement. The driver’s workplace is now characterized by improved ergonomics, and visibility is generally above all praise. If the old bus had only one option of length – twelve meters, the new bus has three: 12.14; 12.96 and 13.99 meters. And now there is not only one wheel formula (4×2), but two – 4×2 for the Tourismo and 6×2 for the Tourismo M and the Tourismo L. But it is not these two passenger cars that should be associated, but the new Tourismo with Travego: they belong to the same class and are actually similar both in size and design features. The only difference is that Travego is richer, and the list of options is longer.
Not to be confused with Travego! Elevating the new Tourismo over the old one, the experts were concerned about how not to make it twin Travego. After all, in this case they might have stepped on the larynx of their song. That’s when the decision came to make the new one more moderate in design and equipment. The power strip also shows «discrimination». While several transmissions are available for the Travego, there are only two for the Tourismo, and both are six-speed manual. The engine in general is one – in-line six, although in three power options: three hundred and fifty-four liters.с. in base, four hundred and eight liters.с. as a feature for the Tourismo and four hundred and twenty-eight liters.с. for Tourismo M and Tourismo L. As unfortunate as it sounds, there are no V8s like on the Travego. The interior configuration also has its own aspects. For example, the basic seating capacity of 51+1+1 in the Tourismo, 55+1+1 in the Tourismo M and 59+1 in the Tourismo L is only available for Germany. Other countries ship versions with a kitchen and toilet, where there are two fewer passenger seats. In general, Mercedes-Benz advertisers have coped with the task.
Three is better than two Why was it chosen for the test not two-axle Tourismo with GVW of eighteen tons, but a 24-ton three-axle vehicle?? The fact is that in Germany, Spain and some EU countries, the three-axle vehicle is the clear winner. Most transport operators prefer to deal with it. The reason, of course, is the permissible axle loads and the largest capacity of the cabin. The volume of luggage compartments in all this is important, although not decisive – here prefer to travel if not lightweight, then with a minimum of suitcases and bags.Calculations show that with the two-axle version the permissible mass of luggage per passenger is 20 kg, while with the three-axle version it is about sixty kg, t.е. three times as much. And that’s even though the Tourismo 4×2 has a maximum capacity of 40 four passengers and the Tourismo 6×2 has a maximum capacity of 50 6 passengers. I do not need to explain what the twelve «extra» seats mean on the basis of business beliefs. Meanwhile, according to official data, the average weight of a euro passenger is sixty-eight kilograms. And if you take old people, even less. But South American tourists don’t fit any benchmark. According to the tour operators, even 100 kg is not the limit for them. Besides, they are not used to traveling light. Buses without a mini-bar and on-board kitchen are not suitable for them. And if you take into account the presence of a toilet, a closet and a refrigerator, where do you want to put it all??! So it turns out that a 6×2 is better than a 4×2.
«Daimler deliberately made the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo such a controversial winner. Three lengths allow the carrier to choose exactly the one that perfectly suits the specifics and disposition of travel. Calculation indicates that the purchase price of the liner per seat may be lower than that of the more expensive versions of the «tourists» of their own and other brands. One of the differences between the new liner and its predecessor is the wealth of electronics. EBS electro-pneumatic braking system with speed limiter during continuous braking DBL already included in the basic equipment. Standard equipment includes ESP, BA critical braking, ABS and ASR anti-lock braking systems. Many competitors have them as options, for a fee.The list of options in the new Tourismo is very modest. It does not have, for example, the system of control over the intersection of lines marking SPA and other «smart» devices – this is the prerogative of more expensive and prestigious Travego. The absence of a huge list of special equipment is explained simply: the plant wanted to provide the carrier with a minimum of costs maximum profit. After all, the passenger is fundamentally fast and safe to cover the distance, paying less money for it, if possible. The choice of colors and materials for the Tourismo interior is also limited. For example, the ceiling only comes in grayish. The advantage of such a solution is good logistics. Suffice it to say that eight hundred panels for a one-year release can be received from a supplier as early as two weeks after placing an order. And for cases with different execution variations, it would take even more time and would probably be difficult to deliver just-in-time.After all, by virtue of its own specification, the Tourismo cannot have four stars. Yes, by the number of passenger seats and the distance between seats it may be, but the lack of a checkroom makes the assignment of sacred «stars» mystical. In general, even with 3 five-point signs, the liner has a kitchenette, on-board refrigerator and toilet.
A benign hotel . When you open the door of the Tourismo, you realize that everything here is made in the European way. No sharp edges for you, no crooked details, no trace of designer tastelessness. The steps and handrails have bright yellow edging – this is the requirement of the European standards. Overhead railing – only on the left side of the bus. Previously, there was a difference between the German and European standards: according to one, the distance of 100 to 90 cm from the floor to the upper edge of the handrail, and according to the other, to the lower edge of the handrail. Eventually, manufacturers certified their products under both requirements. Common sense prevailed: the standard was set at 100 ninety cm to the middle of the handrail (in Russia, the standard is 100 ninety cm to the bottom edge of the handrail). Legalized unification now allows not to prepare the specification of buses for each country separately. All seats in the Tourismo have lap belts – just like on an airplane. Not to buckle them – more expensive for themselves: the passenger pays a fine of 40 euros. The same amount of punishment is imposed on the driver if it turns out that he did not warn those in the cabin. The truth is determined by questioning: the police take their citizens at their word. By the way, in case of an accident insurance companies may reduce the amount of payments if they find out that the driver forgot to warn the passengers about the need to use seat belts. The seats are completely comfortable, and the distance between them is such that you do not feel cramped, neither in the first nor in the last row. It’s just like in a good hotel: comfortable, clean, comfortable and what is important – very quiet. The sound of engine doesn’t tire you out, and even in the rear seats you can speak in a low voice. The only problem is the windows, splashing on the right side. Our test took place in rainy weather, and I noticed in the morning: when we drove away from the hotel, the left side windows were not stained, while the right ones were covered in streaks from the water running off the roof.
On getting behind the wheel, I paid attention to the odometer and trip meter readings: after six thousand and six hundred kilometers, the average fuel consumption was 27.8 liters. This is the data for the incomplete three months that the bus has been driven by different drivers since it was allowed to operate. But, according to the instructor, during tests in the Dutch flatlands, the Tourismo showed a more decent result: 20 four liters.Studying the dashboard, I come to the conclusion that previously there was more information on the screen. Asked the instructor – that’s right: the data are now optimized. If all the control lights are placed on the dashboard, the attention of the person sitting behind the wheel will be scattered. So it is decided: yellowish light flashes – look what happened, but you can go further; reddish light flashed – it means that the condition is critical, you must go to the service. It is enough to find the error code and tell it to 100.Special mention should be made of the control system FPS. Thanks to the second-generation CAN-bus, electric units can be reprogrammed without changing. Why have not abandoned the FPS and kept some elements at an ordinary level? Because we wanted to give free rein to the carriers. Let’s say the customer wants to connect the trailer. Mechanically it is not difficult, but the electrics should be connected by service partners. So as not to force transporters to run to 100 for the small things, they left them the opportunity to connect themselves. Or another situation: after buying the bus, the customer wished to connect the TV, transform the interior into a music room. Previously you would have had to take the bus to the station and do all the work there, now there is a radio preparation and you only need to connect to the connectors. The electric brake system on the Tourismo works together with the pneumatic brake system. The advantage of the system is that the electric valve opens more quickly and dispenses the force better. If the electronics fail, the pneumatics will work and vice versa.
With every cell. In Germany, according to its inhabitants, the amount of fines is more or less tolerable. But many Germans don’t even know them because they don’t violate anything. And the scale of the monetary punishment in the FRG is as follows: speeding more than 10 km. But even knowing this, I could not resist the temptation to test the speed limiter during continuous braking of the DBL. It kicks in when it reaches 100 four kilometers. In my case, the retarder triggered automatically at 100 5 km. And if it had been possible to accelerate the airliner to 100 seven kilometers. Ahead are road repairs and a narrow corridor formed by curbs and signs on the right side, plastic cones on the left. But there is no excitement: a passenger liner is more stable along this line than a streetcar on the rails. After a few miles into the town with narrow streets, and this test is not for the faint-hearted: you have to watch to not hit the roof of the tree branches, not to brush the side of one of the parked cars and not to scare to death entering the S-shaped bundle with a swing of the drivers of oncoming cars. But nothing of the sort happens: the Tourismo is so easy to drive that after a while you forget it’s a 13-meter liner with three axles. Moreover, you get the feeling that you can feel the bus with every cell of your body. Gaining speed is so fast that it is easy to keep the rhythm of traffic, even outside the city. And the obedience of technology to the will of the driver is like sitting behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz car. Yes, that’s the kind of «tourist» you can dream about. But it’s even better to own it!
